Asunción Molinos Gordo (Guzmán, Burgos, Spain, 1979) is a researcher and visual artist whose practice is strongly informed by disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies. The main focus of her work is contemporary peasantry and historical processes of cultural disruption.
Through her artistic practice, she questions the categories that define “innovation” within dominant contemporary discourses, exploring different forms of intellectual domination exercised from urban contexts over rural ones. Her understanding of small- and medium-scale farmers extends beyond their role as food producers to consider them as cultural agents, responsible both for preserving traditional knowledge and for generating new forms of expertise to address contemporary challenges.
Molinos works across sculpture, installation, textiles, photography, video, sound, and other media to examine rural contexts. Driven by a strong desire to understand the value and complexity of rural cultural production, as well as the burdens that keep it isolated and marginalised, she has produced works addressing the transformation of agricultural labour, the impact of biotechnology, international food trade, transhumant architecture, peasant protests, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the bureaucratisation of territory, ancestral irrigation systems, and rural forms of constructing collective well-being.
In 2015, Molinos was awarded the Sharjah Biennial Prize for her project WAM (World Agriculture Museum), and in 2019 she represented Spain at the 13th Havana Biennial. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid and a Master’s degree in Theory and Practice of Contemporary Visual Arts from the same university. She also completed further training in Anthropological History and Methodology at UNED-Escuelas Pías.

Asunción Molinos Gordo (Guzmán, Burgos, España 1979), es investigadora y artista visual, trabaja desde una perspectiva influida fuertemente por disciplinas como la antropología, la sociología y los estudios culturales. El principal foco de su obra es el campesinado contemporáneo y los procesos históricos de interrupción cultural.
En su práctica artística cuestiona las categorías que definen la ‘innovación’ en los discursos dominantes hoy en día, explorando las diferentes formas de dominación intelectual desde lo urbano, sobre lo rural. Su entendimiento de la figura de lxs pequeñxs o medianxs agricultorxs, no se ciñe solo a la de productores alimenticios, sino también a la de agentes culturales, responsables tanto de perpetuar el saber tradicional, como de generar unas nuevas erudiciones para enfrentar los retos actuales.
Molinos utiliza la escultura, la instalación, los textiles, la fotografía, el vídeo, el sonido y otros medios para examinar el ámbito rural. Impulsada por un fuerte deseo de comprender el valor y la complejidad de su producción cultural, así como las cargas que lo mantienen aislado y marginado; ha producido obras en torno a la transformación del trabajo agrario, el impacto de la biotecnología, el comercio internacional de alimentos, arquitectura trashumante, protestas campesinas, la PAC y burocratización del territorio, sistemas de riego ancestrales y formas campesinas de construcción del bienestar.
Asunción ganó el Premio de la Bienal de Sharjah en 2015 con su proyecto WAM (Museo Agrícola Mundial) y representó a España en La XIII Bienal de La Habana 2019.
